Increment In Grants
Not only this, but the announcement also covered the increase in SASSA payments. We have got to know from the announcement that there is an increase in the payments of several grants that the South African Social Security Agency SASSA is offering this month of November. Although there was a slight increase, that would still be beneficial for the needy citizens.
SASSA Grant Payment Increase Breakdown
Several SASSA grants are slightly increased including old age/pensioners grant, disability grant, care dependency grant and war veterans grant.
- War Veteran Grant increased from R 2190 to R 2200 (increment of R10).
- Care Dependency Grant increased from R 2180 to R 2190 (increment of R10).
- Disability Grant increased from R 2180 to R 2190 (increment of R10).
- Old Age Pension; Those old age citizens of South Africa who are under 75 years of age will now receive R 2190 with an upgrade of R 10.
- Old Age Pension; Those South African citizens who are above the age of 75 years will receive R 2210 from now onwards with an increment of R 10. The grant was previously R 2200.
Why Only R10?
Although R 10 increase in all four of these SASSA grants is quite little, it does impact the beneficiaries lifestyle particularly those who are living in very poor conditions. This step taken by SASSA reflects the effort of the organisation to adjust all things together, the budget allocation, and South African financial needs.
According to the spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA grants are to be budgeted within an R 265 billion national social grant budget. This budget is managed by the National Treasury and Department of Social Development.
So the decisions of increment with just R 10 on several SASSA grants is not made randomly, instead is made with proper discussions and negotiations at national level while balancing the South Africans economic challenges and budget constraints.
Paseka also explained that this increase will align the budgetary limitations, ultimately helping the organisation in managing the budget and providing small incremental adjustments in the grant payments, instead of making no adjustments at all. Larger payment increases may disturb the budget of the organisation and will make management of the grants, within the budget limitations, much difficult.
Improvements In SASSA Payment Process
SASSA, after so many crises in October is now taking steps and planning to smoothen out the grant distribution processes. The organisation has adopted a payment schedule that not only will help the beneficiaries in receiving their payments earlier but also will help in managing the crowd at payment points.
All of the SASSA grant payments are distributed over several days for this month of November. This strategy aimed to minimise crowding and long queues, ultimately helping older, ill and sick people in.getting grants with ease. SASSA has placed the payment dates of grants far from one another to accommodate the needs of recipients in a better, more organised way. You can check your SASSA welfare payments dates at https://srd-sassa-gov.co.za/.
This has not only helped organisation in managing and disbursing the payments smoothly but also minimised the discomfort of large gatherings and the risk of conditions, (one like the collapsing of an applicant that recently happened in October who was standing in a long queue at SASSA office.)
Addressing Challenges At Rural Cash Pay Points
The spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi also emphasised on the steps taken by SASSA to provide accessible services particularly in rural areas. The organization has targeted the areas where it is hard to reach SASSA offices or pay points.
The concerns like transportation expense and minimum infrastructure makes it quite difficult for the grant holders to reach payment points and get their grant payments. Letsatsi explained that SASSA is working to make it easier for the beneficiaries to receive payments from cash pay points particularly in rural areas.
